About Us: Midlands Mediation Network At various times throughout the 1990s the idea of mediation as a primary form of conflict resolution seemed to grasp the imagination of more people than it usually did. And all across the region organisations were set up, mediators were trained and new services reached out into our communities. Although mediation has quite ancient roots, even the oldest of services around at that time was barely in its teens. And so the rapid growth in mediation bought forth a new generation of practitioners all looking for the guidance of an older sibling. At the end of that decade, I was one such nascent being. As I stood there blinking in the bright light of expectation wondering what shape and colour my new mediation service should be, I was told of a meeting that just might help me make up my mind. More than a decade later, I have the privilege of being chair of the organisation that emerged at that meeting. Many of the faces may have changed in that time, and the landscape has inevitably altered, but we still gather to meet the aims you’ll find illustrated here. As we now prepare for our adolescence we have defined a new beginning, outlined a new direction and from the consolidation of all that we have achieved, we are now ready to continue our development into maturity. My needs of the network have changed over the years. The service we have developed in North Staffordshire continues to benefit from the wisdom of my peers as we meet each quarter to discover and discuss what is new in our profession. The time and energy I have saved by not having to reinvent the wheel throughout the early growth of my service can now be used, if you’ll forgive me, to reinvent the wheel. Each year discovers a new area of conflict that can benefit from mediation, and our practices must change and adapt accordingly. Sometimes we develop and teach one another, and at other times we learn from one another and develop. But at all times, we share. George Tzilivakis Chair January 2009
